The Sarasota Police Department, in partnership with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), will host the DEA’s National Prescription Drug Take Back Day on Saturday, Oct. 24, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the Police Department has announced.

“The event provides a safe, free and anonymous way for community members to dispose of unneeded prescription medications,” a news release explains. “The DEA and its law enforcement partners will collect tablets, capsules, patches and other solid prescription medications at participating locations,” the release adds.

“Collection sites will not accept syringes, sharps or illicit drugs,” the release points out. “Liquid medications, such as cough syrup, should remain sealed in their original containers with the caps tightly secured to prevent leakage,” it adds.

Persons wishing to dispose of unneeded medications may do so at the Police Department Headquarters, which stands at 2099 Adams Lane in downtown Sarasota, and at Caring Collective, which is located at 1750 17th St. in Sarasota, the release says.

“Take Back Day has helped people safely dispose of medications that are old, unwanted or expired, helping prevent medication misuse and abuse,” the release explains. “Since the program began, more than 20.4 million pounds, or 10,200 tons, of medication have been removed from circulation through Take Back Day events,” it points out.
