Motorcyclist dies from injuries suffered in Sarasota crash

Incident reported at intersection of South Tamiami Trail and Grove Street

The Sarasota Police Department’s Traffic Unit is investigating a fatal crash that occurred around 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 1, the agency has announced.

A motorcycle and a pick-up truck collided at the intersection of South Tamiami Trail (U.S. 41) and Grove Street, a news release said. The motorcyclist died at Sarasota Memorial Hospital from injuries sustained in the crash, the release added.

Grove Street is about a block north of Webber Street, a map shows. It is primarily a residential area, except for businesses located directly on U.S. 41.

In response to the agency’s Facebook post about the incident, a man who noted that his daughter was friends with the motorcyclist said that the pick-up truck made a left turn in front of the motorcyclist.

Another person wrote, “[U.S.] 41 is very dangerous in this section due to 3 lanes of traffic each way, heavy traffic, high speeds and a center turn lane allowing traffic to turn into multiple businesses. Please drive with patience and extreme caution!”

No further details were available from the Police Department prior to the deadline for this issue of The Sarasota News Leader.

  1. South Trail (US 41) needs a safety upgrade, including a concrete median such as was recently completed on US 41 in Bradenton, which eliminated the center “suicide” left turn lane.
