Nuisance plant removal and planting of native vegetation to be part of activities for volunteers
Sarasota County staff is inviting volunteers to celebrate National Public Lands Day (NPLD) on Sept. 28 by participating in an event at Phillippi Estate Park in Sarasota.
For more than three decades, a news release explains, “NPLD has inspired thousands of volunteers to give back to the nation’s public lands in all 50 states and U.S. territories. This September, communities across the country will unite to celebrate and care for public lands — for current and future generations.”
The theme for National Public Lands Day 2024 is Together for Tomorrow, the release notes.
Volunteers of all ages are encouraged to partner with Sarasota County Parks, Recreation and Natural Resources Department (PRNR) staff in various activities, “including litter pick-up, nuisance plant removal, native vegetation planting and mulching at Phillippi Estate Park,” the release adds.
The hours will be 8:30 to 11:30 a.m., the release says. Phillippi Estate Park stands at 5500 S. Tamiami Trail in Sarasota.
“Our volunteers devote countless hours in supporting our park systems,” said PRNR Director Nicole Rissler in the release. “Their dedication helps preserve the county’s parks and natural areas and keeps these spaces healthy and beautiful for future generations to enjoy,” Rissler added.
“Registration for the event is mandatory,” the release points out. Additionally, volunteers are encouraged to bring hand pruners, work gloves, hats, sunglasses, refillable water bottles, bug spray and sunscreen. Closed-toe and closed-heel shoes, such as hiking boots or sneakers, should be worn, the release further notes.
