Person does not have to be Ring customer to use app, city staff points out

Neighbors by Ring, “the popular mobile app for doorbells and security cameras,” has become one of “the many communication tools utilized by the City of Sarasota for community outreach and notifications,” city staff announced this week.
“Neighbors is a social networking platform that allows users to connect with their community,” the release explains. “The Neighbors app is a free standalone app available to anyone,” regardless of whether the person is a Ring customer, the release notes.
“Through its verified Neighbors account, the City of Sarasota will share important community notices, including critical information during hurricane season,” the release points out.
“The Neighbors app is an additional outreach tool,” said Communications General Manager Jan Thornburg in the release. “We worked directly with Ring to ensure we would have a verified account in place and ready to launch before hurricane season. We’ll be able to cast a wider net to connect with more residents, which will be particularly beneficial during an emergency, like an impending hurricane,” Thornburg added in the release.
The verified Neighbors account was launched in conjunction with Hurricane Preparedness Week, whose 2025 observance is May 4 through May 10, the release says.
“The Neighbors app can be downloaded through the Apple App Store or Google Play. It also is available within the Ring app,” the release explains.
News and alerts are posted on the City of Sarasota website www.Sarasotafl.gov. Information also is shared on the City of Sarasota Facebook, Instagram, X and Nextdoor channels, the release notes.
