Susan Nations, who was Teacher of the Year for the Sarasota County Schools in 2005, will relocate from Southside Elementary
Sarasota County Superintendent of Schools Lori White has appointed Susan Nations as the new principal of Wilkinson Elementary School in Sarasota, effective June 8, the school district has announced.
Nations, who is the assistant principal at Southside Elementary School in Sarasota, will succeed Bill Muth, who has been serving as acting principal at Wilkinson since January, a news release says.
Nations was selected as the Sarasota County School District Teacher of the Year in 2005, the release notes.
“Nations is an Ohio native who grew up and graduated from high school in Tampa,” the release continues. “She comes from a family of many educators in Ohio and married into a family of educators in Sarasota.”
Nations holds a bachelor’s degree in elementary and early childhood education from Florida Southern College, a master’s degree in curriculum and instruction from National Louis University and a second master’s degree in educational leadership from St. Leo University, the release adds.
She began her career in Hillsborough County in 1986, teaching primary grades and serving as a reading specialist and reading intervention teacher until 1999, the release continues.
From 1999 to 2011, she was a literacy and data coach at Gocio Elementary School in Sarasota. During that time she earned National Board Certification in early to middle childhood literacy, the release notes.
Nations has been the assistant principal at Southside Elementary School since 2011, the release says. “She has co-authored four professional books and written numerous teachers’ guides for national publishers,” it adds. She has served as a literacy consultant and conference presenter at the district, state and national levels.
She and her husband, Don, who attended Wilkinson as a child, have been married for 29 years, the release continues. They have three adult children and two school-age children.
Wilkinson Elementary School is located at 3400 Wilkinson Road.
