The Leagues of Women Voters of Sarasota and Manatee counties “are sponsoring a joint rally in defense of democracy” from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Feb. 14, at the intersection of University Parkway and Cattlemen Drive in Sarasota, the organizations have announced.

“At a time when the principles of our Constitution and the rule of law face serious challenges, it is essential that we raise our voices together,” the Manatee County League said in a news release.

“The event announcement on the Sarasota League’s event calendar states, ‘Today’s threats to our Constitution and the rule of law require us to vigorously speak out and remind our elected representatives they need to be responsive to the will of the people,’ ” the release notes.

“The League of Women Voters is a grassroots, nonpartisan political organization formed by the suffragists in 1920 to enable women to carry out their new responsibilities as voters,” the release explains. “Its mission is to ‘Empower Voters. Defend Democracy.’ ”

“All concerned citizens are welcome,” the release points out.

Although signs will be available, participants are encouraged to display their own nonpartisan signs, the release adds.
