Sarasota County announces holiday closings

Garbage and recycling collections pushed back a day from Thursday and Friday

Sarasota County Government offices, including libraries, recreation centers and the Florida Department of Health in Sarasota County, will be closed Thursday, Nov. 23, and Friday, Nov. 24, for the Thanksgiving holiday, the county has announced.

Residents who live in unincorporated areas of the county will not have yard waste, recyclables or garbage collected on Thanksgiving Day, a news release points out.

For residents whose regular collection day is Thursday, yard waste, recyclables and garbage will be picked up on Friday, Nov. 24. For residents whose regular collection day is Friday, yard waste, recyclables and garbage will be picked up on Saturday, Nov. 25.

Because collection times vary, residents should place refuse materials at the curb by 6 a.m. on the day of pickup, the release emphasizes.

Libraries will be open Saturday, Nov. 25, and other county offices will reopen Monday, Nov. 27, the release says.

No regular Sarasota County Area Transit (SCAT) bus service was offered on Thanksgiving, but the Siesta Key Breeze was operating, the release pointed out. Full service will resume on Friday, Nov. 24. The SCAT administrative office and the Downtown Transfer Station customer service window will be closed Thursday and Friday, the release notes.

Payne Park Tennis Center will be closed Thursday but will be open for regular hours, 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., on Friday. Arlington Park and the Knight Trail Park gun range will be closed Thursday and Friday, the release adds.

Sarasota County’s chemical collection centers at 8750 Bee Ridge Road in Sarasota, and 250 S. Jackson Road in Venice, along with the ReUzIt Shop at 8750 Bee Ridge Road, will be closed Thursday and Friday.

The Citizens’ Convenience Center at 4010 Knights Trail Road in Nokomis, will be closed Thursday but will be open Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., the release notes

All three centers will be open on Saturday, Nov. 25.
