Freedom Awards Banquet set for Oct. 3
The Sarasota County branch of the NAACP has announced its 2024 Freedom Award honorees, with its annual Freedom Awards Banquet to take place at 6 p.m. on Oct. 3.
In its 39th year, the Freedom Awards Banquet serves as the primary fundraising event for the local chapter and as a public forum “for recognizing the outstanding individuals and organizations that have made exemplary contributions to our community and exemplify the NAACP’s mission,” a news release explains.
“This year’s Freedom Awards Banquet theme is The Power of the Dream: Justice for All, the release continues, with the honorees serving “as shining community examples of this theme in their commitment to making lives better for all living in our community every day,” said President Trevor Harvey.
The 2024 Freedom Award honorees are as follows:
- Lifetime Achievement Award — Dr.Florence Jackson.
- President’s Award — Dr. Randall Morgan and Valerie L. Powell-Stafford.
- Go Forth and Prosper Award — Jabari Williams, director of the K-8 Programs at Girls Inc. in Sarasota.
- Public Service Award — Sarasota Police Chief Rex Troche.
- Community Service Award — Carlos Yancy.
- Education Award — Edna Sherrell, a Booker High School teacher.
- Business and Industry Award — Marie Selby Botanical Gardens.
