Acosta released on $150 bond

At 11:56 p.m. on Friday, June 26, a Florida Highway Patrol trooper based in Venice arrested a 26-year-old Sarasota man on a “super speeder” charge of driving 142 mph in a northbound lane on Interstate 75 near the Fruitville Road exit, the agency reported.
The posted speed limit in that area is 70 mph, the Highway Patrol pointed out.
Israel Jacob Acosta, of 8324 Brandeis Circle in Sarasota, formally was charged with operating a motor vehicle at a speed more than 50 mph above the posted limit. The state “super speeder” law, Florida Statue 316.1922 — which went into effect on July 1, 2025 — calls for persons convicted of a first offense to serve up to 30 days in jail, pay a $500 fine, or both. A second or subsequent conviction under the law increases the potential jail time up to 90 days and hikes the fine to $1,000.
The law also says, “A person convicted of a second or subsequent violation of this section that occurs within 5 years after the date of a prior conviction for a violation of this section shall have his or her
driving privilege revoked for at least 180 days but no more than 1 year.”
The Florida Highway Patrol report said Acosta was driving a 2016 Ford Mustang GT. A MotorTrend review of that vehicle, based on a road test after the model was released, reported that it could hit 60 mph “in just 4 seconds,” while it could travel a quarter mile “in 12.9 [seconds] at 110 mph flat. “
Acosta was transported to the Sarasota County Jail, the report added. He was released on Saturday, June 27, on bond of $150, the Sheriff’s Office Corrections Division booking record shows. His arraignment has been set for July 27, it adds.
