Sarasota Memorial ranked best for nurses among health care facilities in region and among top 10 in Florida

Nearly 350 hospitals evaluated for NurseJournal rankings

Sarasota Memorial Hospital-Sarasota has been ranked among the top 10 hospitals for nurses in the state of Florida, as well as the highest in the region, according to the latest ranking from NurseJournal, “a national resource in education and career development for nurses and aspiring healthcare professionals,” the hospital has announced.

“To create the list of the Top 10 Hospitals for Nurses in Florida, nearly 350 hospitals in the state were evaluated based on specific criteria,” a news release explains. Among those criteria, it notes, are patient satisfaction, hospital safety, Magnet status, staffing ratios, and ratings from two nurse reviewers. Data was gathered from Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS), the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Hospital General Information, and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) Magnet Recognition Program, the release adds.

Atop the report on the rankings, the NurseJournal website says, “The best hospital choices for nurses in Florida offer career advancement and professional development.”

Sarasota Memorial ranked second on the list of Florida hospitals because of its high score, which was based on key factors, including nurses’ work environment, career opportunities, nurses’ benefits, communications, patient experience and safety measures, the release says. “SMH ultimately achieved a final score equivalent to an ‘A’ rating.”

“Our longstanding vision and our overriding goal is to be the absolute best place to be a patient, the best place to work and the best place to practice medicine,” said Sarasota Memorial Health Care System Chief Nursing Officer Connie Andersen in the release. “This means not only recruiting and hiring the best nurses and staff, but supporting them as they achieve their best,” Anderson added in the release. “Our strength comes from our incredible team.”

“This is not the first time that Sarasota Memorial has been recognized for excellence in nursing,” the release points out. Since 2003, Sarasota Memorial Hospital-Sarasota has been continuously designated as a Magnet hospital, the nation’s highest honor for nursing excellence, the release notes. “The four-time consecutive designation has been achieved by fewer than 2% of hospitals in the U.S.,” the release adds.
