Sarasota Police Chief Rex Troche has been named secretary of the board of directors of the Police Executive Research Forum (PERF), “the nation’s preeminent independent research organization focused on critical issues in policing,” the Sarasota Police Department announced this week.

“PERF is an independent research organization founded in 1976 that identifies and promotes best practices in policing,” a news release explains. The organization focuses on issues such as “reducing police response to resistance, community policing, technology, crime reduction strategies and other challenges facing law enforcement agencies across the country,” the release adds.

“PERF works to advance professionalism in policing and improve the delivery of police services through national leadership, research, policy development and thoughtful discussion of policing and criminal justice issues,” the release points out.

Troche will join “law enforcement leaders from across the country who help guide the organization’s work and contribute to the national conversation on the future of policing,” the release notes.

“I’m honored to serve as secretary of PERF’s board of directors and to work alongside law enforcement leaders from across the country who are committed to advancing our profession,” Troche said in the release. “Challenges facing law enforcement do not stop at the borders of our communities,” he continued. “Sharing ideas, learning from one another and using research and proven practices to make our communities safer benefits all of us,” he said.

“Based in Washington, D.C., PERF has more than 3,000 members,” the release points out. “Its membership includes police executives and other law enforcement professionals committed to improving the effectiveness and professionalism of policing.

In addition to serving as the City of Sarasota police chief, the release continues, “Troche has nearly 30 years of law enforcement experience and has held leadership positions in a variety of areas, including patrol, investigations, training and administration.”

The other law enforcement leaders on PERF’s board are as follows, the release notes:

  • Chief John Drake, Metropolitan Nashville, Tenn., Police Department, president.
  • Chief Lisa Davis, Austin, Texas Police Department, vice president.
  • Commissioner Kevin Bethel, Philadelphia Police Department, treasurer.
  • Commissioner Robert Tracy, St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department, member at large — elected.
  • Chief Ana Lalley, Elgin, Illinois, Police Department, member at large — appointed.
