Sheriff’s Office investigating officer-involved shooting reported in Venice

Suspect, who was armed with knife, was not injured

Just before 5:30 p.m. on June 21, the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office announced that it was investigating an officer-involved shooting that had occurred in the area of Park Road in Venice.

“At approximately 12:52 p.m.” that day, the news release said, “deputies responded to a domestic disturbance at a residence where a suspect was armed with a knife. One deputy deployed a taser, and the other fired one round from his handgun. The round did not strike the suspect, and he was not injured.”

The release added, “The suspect is being detained as the investigation remains ongoing.”

No further information was available prior to the publication of this issue of The Sarasota News Leader.

Park Road runs partly parallel to U.S. 41/South Tamiami Trail in Venice, a map shows. The road has Alligator Place as its northern boundary and Woodmere Road as its southern boundary. Park Road is south of Alligator Creek.

A January 2022 CNN report pointed out that the FBI’s Law Enforcement Officers Killed and Assaulted database showed that “503 officers nationwide were feloniously killed between 2011 and 2020.” During the same period, 43 of those deaths occurred while officers were responding to domestic disturbance or domestic violence calls.
