SMH-Sarasota recognized among nation’s 50 best hospitals for rehabilitation and placed in top 10% for 23 other high-performing specialties, procedures and conditions
On July 16, U.S. News & World Report recognized Sarasota Memorial Hospital (SMH) among the nation’s top hospitals for 24 medical specialties, procedures and conditions, the hospital’s staff announced.
“U.S. News ranked SMH among the 50 best for specialized rehabilitation,” a news release points out. “The hospital also ranked in the top 10%” for six other high-performing specialties,” and it received top ratings for 17 high-performing procedures and conditions, the release adds.
Of the nearly 5,000 hospitals that U.S. News evaluates each year, the release continues, SMH is the only one in the Suncoast region that ever has made U.S. News’ 50 Best Hospitals lists.
“Notably, SMH-Sarasota’s Rehabilitation team continues to outperform its own ranking from previous years,” rising to No. 29 on U.S. News’ latest 50 Best Hospitals list, the release points out. That is up from No. 31 last year and No. 35 in 2022, the release adds.
The 2024 U.S. News report recognizes SMH for 24 high-performing specialties, procedures and conditions, up from 20 last year, the release notes. “The ‘high performer’ specialty rankings place SMH among the top 10% of hospitals nationwide,” the release points out.
“David Verinder, CEO of Sarasota Memorial Health Care System, credits the top-tier physicians and staff caring for patients at SMH, along with [the hospital’s] deep roots and longstanding community mission, for the consistently high ratings from U.S. News and other independent quality rating organizations,” the release continues.
“Our physicians, nurses and staff share a sense of purpose and community mission due to Sarasota Memorial’s singular status as the region’s only not-for-profit, public hospital, ”Verinder said in the release. “SMH has been caring for this community for nearly 100 years. The patient outcomes our team achieves are due entirely to their diligence and dedication to those we serve,” he noted.
In addition to its national recognition on multiple lists, the release says, SMH continues to rank among Florida’s top five hospitals “and maintain its longstanding record as the highest rated hospital in South Florida,” along with its No. 1 status in the Bradenton-Sarasota-North Port metropolitan region.
Sarah Lodge, chair of the elected Sarasota County Public Hospital Board that governs the health system, commended SMH for setting the benchmark for high quality care, regionally and nationally, the release adds.
“Over the years, as our hospital grew with the community and evolved into the regional referral center it is today, we have never lost sight of our public mission and why we are here,” Lodge said in the release. “We continue to serve as our community’s healthcare safety net, while providing the highest quality, nationally ranked medical care.”
