The Sarasota Bradenton International Airport (SRQ) started off 2024 with another new record, airport staff has announced.

During January 395,993 passengers traveled through SRQ, representing a 5% increase, compared to the 377,617 passengers counted in January 2023, a news release says.

Further, the release points out, the 12-month activity through January totaled 4,340,778 passengers, which was a 10.65% jump from the 3,923,034 figure for the 12 months through January 2023.

For another point of comparison: In January 2022, SRQ counted 302,189 passengers, which — it noted then — was the highest number ever for January in the airport’s history. That figure was 138% higher than the January 2021 tally of 126,704, the airport reported.

The count for January this year is more than three times higher than that January 2021 total.

In the release regarding the passenger count for this January, Frederick “Rick” Piccolo, president and CEO of the airport, noted the staff’s delight with the report. “Looking ahead,” he added in the release, “we anticipate a consistent growth trajectory, especially with the upcoming surge in spring break travel.”

Typically, March is the busiest month of the year for travelers coming to Sarasota County, as documented by reports on “bed tax” revenue that the Sarasota County Tax Collector’s Office receives from hosts of accommodations, as well as by reports provided to the county’s tourism office, Visit Sarasota County.

SRQ also recently announced that Allegiant will begin new nonstop service to Plattsburgh International Airport (PBG) in New York.

On Feb. 12, Allegiant said the service would be launched on June 12, one of 10 new nonstop routes to 14 cities across the United States.

In that news release, SRQ President and CEO Piccolo noted, “This addition will provide a convenient connection for both U.S. and Canadian travelers, allowing them to explore the stunning beaches, cultural gems, and unforgettable experiences that the Sarasota Bradenton area has to offer.”
