People of all ages are being invited to “Have some fun in the sun” and show off their sand-sculpting skills as the Sarasota County Parks, Recreation and Natural Resources Department hosts the 45th annual Amateur Sand Sculpture Contest on Siesta Beach on Saturday, May 6.

This free, family-friendly event is open to children, youth and adults — and all amateur skill levels, a county news release points out. Cash prizes are sponsored by the Friends of Sarasota County Parks and the Siesta Key Chamber of Commerce, the release adds. The prizes will be awarded to first-, second- and third-place finishers in the adult (individual), adult (team), children (10 years old and younger) and youth (11-17 years old) categories. One sculptor will be honored as the overall people’s choice winner, the release notes.

Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m. May 6 on Siesta Beach near the yellow lifeguard stand, the release adds. Each participant will be assigned a 10-foot-by-10-foot square. Judging will start at 1 p.m., and awards will be presented at 2 p.m., the release says. Spectators are invited to vote for the people’s choice award.

Siesta Beach is located at 948 Beach Road on Siesta Key. No rain date is provided for this event, the release points out.
