The Sarasota Police Department Traffic Unit is investigating a bicycle fatality crash that occurred about 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 12, the department has reported.

Officers responded to a call about a vehicle having struck a bicyclist in the northbound lanes of North Tamiami Trail (U.S. 41) near the 16th Street intersection, a news release says. Witnesses told officers that the crash happened after an adult female on a bicycle attempted to cross North Tamiami Trail after heading westbound on 16th Street.

“The name of the bicyclist is being withheld until the next of kin can be notified,” the release points out. “The driver of the vehicle, an adult male, stayed on the scene and was cooperative with officers,” the release adds.

The bicyclist was transported to Sarasota Memorial Hospital, where she later died as a result of her injuries, the release notes.

Both the Sarasota Police Department Traffic Unit and the Criminalistics Unit responded to the scene, the release says. “The northbound lanes of North Tamiami Trail from 14th Street to 20th Street were closed for several hours.” Traffic was diverted onto 14th Street, the department noted on its Facebook page.

The crash remains under investigation by the Sarasota Police Department Traffic Unit, the release adds.
