Funding ensures access to healthful snacks and beverages during free, nature-based education programs
Big Waters Land Trust, which is based in Osprey, has received a $2,500 grant award from the Junior League of Sarasota in support of its Community Outreach and Education Nutrition and Hydration initiative, the nonprofit announced this week.
An accredited land trust, Big Waters has established as its mission the protection of land and water for the benefit of people and nature, a news release points out.
The Junior League grant helps ensure that participants of all ages have access to healthful snacks and beverages during Big Waters’ 2026 free, nature-based education programs, the release notes. “By providing this essential support, we are removing barriers and making these experiences more comfortable and accessible for everyone while they connect with nature and experience its benefits” — whether a person is young or old, a participant or a volunteer, the release adds.
“Big Waters is committed to offering nutrition and hydration during at least 60% of all nature education programs in 2026, helping participants stay energized, hydrated, and engaged throughout their time outdoors,” the release points out.
“Access to a simple snack or a bottle of water can make all the difference in whether someone feels welcome and able to fully take part in these experiences,” Sarah Denison Williams, who leads Big Waters’ nature-based programs, said in the release.
“We’re not just introducing people to nature; we’re igniting curiosity and instilling a love of nature for people today and for the next generation of land stewards,” said Christine Johnson, president of Big Waters, in the release. “The skills and curiosity they build in our programs follow them home and ripple out into their families and communities,” she added.
