The City of Sarasota has launched a bike-sharing pilot program to help residents and visitors enjoy the St. Armands area through the use of sustainable, alternative transportation, the city has announced.

About 10 cruiser bicycles are available on an hourly or daily basis, a news release says. They may be rented via mobile phone from a self-service station located near the first-level entrance of the St. Armands garage, the release explains.

“This is a great opportunity to provide another mobility option for people to get around and reduce traffic congestion on St. Armands Circle and the keys,” said city Parking Division Manager Mark Lyons in the release. “We’ll be monitoring the success of the pilot program and may look to expand to other city-owned parking garages in downtown Sarasota in the very near future,” he added in the release.

The city is partnering with local company I Bike Sarasota, which is operating the bike-share program, including the handling of transactions, the release points out.

“We’re excited to team up with the City of Sarasota to offer a fun and easy way to explore all that St. Armands Circle and Lido Key have to offer,” said I Bike Sarasota owner Bob Nikla in the release.
