At 6 p.m. on Monday, June 19, representatives of Siesta Key businessman Gary Kompothecras will host a virtual Neighborhood Workshop on a proposal for the Crescent Club, on south Siesta, to be able to provide live music after 10 p.m.
As The Sarasota News Leader has reported, Genesis Planning and Development of Bradenton recently filed a preliminary application for the club, seeking the necessary Special Exception for the extended entertainment hours.
Kompothecras and members of his family have owned the Crescent Club since Jan. 4, 2019. The business stands at 6519 Midnight Pass Road. A number of condominium complexes are in the surrounding area.
The county’s Unified Development Code (UDC), which contains all of the land-use and zoning regulations, allows only recorded music to be played after 10 p.m., the preliminary application pointed out.
Kompothecras’ request, the application continued, is for a Special Exception that would enable live performances until 11 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and until midnight on Fridays and Saturdays.
In an announcement that it sent to all of its members this week, the Siesta Key Condominium Council pointed out of the Neighborhood Workshop, “This is not a public hearing. The purpose of the meeting is to inform neighboring residents of the nature of the proposal, discuss the concept plan, and to seek comments.”
Residents will have the opportunity to ask questions and express concerns about the proposal, the Condominium Council notice added. Ultimately, Planning Commission and County Commission hearings will be held on the Special Exception application, he notice said.
The Crescent Club is located near water, which carries sound, the Council notice also pointed out. Further, it said three other nearby restaurants/bars present live music. “If this special exception is granted,” the notice continued, “it could set a new precedent for the area and the proposed hotels, including the owner’s planned Old Stickney Point Hotel.
The last line referred to the County Commission approval of Kompothecras’ plans to construct a seven-story, 120-room hotel at the intersection of Old Stickney Point Road and Peacock Road. The commission’s 4-1 vote followed a public hearing on Nov. 2, 2021.
The hotel plans — along with those for a five-story parking garage that Kompothecras wants to build between Old Stickney Point and Stickney Point roads — plus plans for an eight-story, 170-room hotel on four parcels between Calle Miramar and Beach Road, on the edge of Siesta Village, are being challenged in the 12th Judicial Circuit Court.
