Members of the public are invited to attend one of two open houses on Tuesday, March 10, as City of Sarasota staff continues work on a “vision for the future of transportation” in the community, the city has announced.

City staff is in the third phase of Sarasota in Motion, the first citywide transportation master plan, a news release explains. When completed, Sarasota in Motion “will serve as a playbook for how the City not only invests in transportation infrastructure, but also how it achieves the community’s long-term quality of life goals,” the release adds.

“Anyone who lives, works or plays in Sarasota is invited to attend one of the two upcoming workshops and review and provide feedback on the draft project list developed since the transportation planning process kicked off last year,” the release points out.

Both meetings will be held on Tuesday, March 10, the release notes, with two options offered that day:

  • Open house No. 1:11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Bayfront Community Center, located at 803 N. Tamiami Trail.
  • Open house No. 2:5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Robert L. Taylor Community Complex, located at 1845 34th St.

Both meetings will cover the same material, so those interested may attend whichever option they prefer, the release notes.

“We’re in an exciting phase of the master planning process, where we’re starting to look at actual projects that will reshape our transportation network,” said Chief Transportation Planner Colleen McGue in the release. “Our team has gathered lots of valuable input from the community on the changes and improvements they’d like to see, and now we’re beginning the work of putting that into action through real transportation investments,” she added in the release.

City staff has hosted multiple public workshops and smaller “pop-up” events throughout Sarasota over the past year “to engage with community members and develop a vision for how we can get around more safely and efficiently,” the release says. Comments and ideas also were gathered online through an interactive feedback map that may be viewed on SarasotaInMotion.com.

Staff with the city’s Planning Department and its transportation consultant will continue to work through the spring to finalize the master plan, the release adds. The City Commission is anticipated to adopt the plan this summer, the release notes.
