As part of the ongoing Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) flood map modernization project, the FEMA flood maps for Sarasota County and its municipalities became effective Friday, Nov. 4, the county has announced.

After the preliminary maps were received in December 2014, Sarasota County staff worked with a consultant, Amec Foster Wheeler, to conduct a detailed review of all 110 of FEMA’s digital maps of the unincorporated areas of the county; the cities of Sarasota, Venice and North Port; and the Town of Longboat Key, a news release explains. “Through the process, the maps have refined the floodplain mapping to better reflect the community’s flood risks,” it adds.

“The maps were produced using state-of-the-art technology and advanced engineering” to increase their quality, reliability and availability, the release points out. “In addition to providing more accurate and up-to-date flood hazard information, the map modernization program enhances community officials’ and citizens’ decision-making and their ability to manage risks and other issues locally,” the release continues.

The program is a presidential initiative funded by Congress.
