Sarasota Chapter of ACLU to hold annual meeting on March 25
The Annual meeting and election of the Sarasota Chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Florida will feature a talk by Kirk Bailey, newly appointed political director of the Florida ACLU, the chapter has announced.
The meeting will be held on Saturday, March 25, at 2:30 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Church, located at 3975 Fruitville Road in Sarasota.
Bailey’s remarks on the theme How To Win Friends and Influence Legislators will be followed by a question-and-answer session, a news release says. “The meeting is open to the public, as always,” the release points out.
Kirk has held professional staff positions with the state legislatures of Oregon, Hawaii and Alaska; and with former U.S. Sen. Frank Murkowski (R-Alaska) in Washington D.C., the release notes. In addition, he has published articles on school safety, youth violence and civil liberties concerns, the release adds. He has a degree in political science from the University of Oregon, it notes, and he holds a law degree from the University of Oregon School of Law.
“We have so many new groups in our area that want to be heard,” said Pete Tannen, president of the Sarasota ACLU, in the release. “The more effective we are in getting our issues in front of our elected officials, the better. And the more we coordinate our efforts, the more successful we’ll all be,” he added in the release.
The Sarasota Chapter of the ACLU of Florida serves Sarasota, Manatee and DeSoto counties, the release explains. “In the past four months, our local membership has doubled, to over 2,400 members — a new high in our 42-year history here!” the release points out.
