City and County of Sarasota announce holiday closings

No changes planned for garbage, recycling and yard waste collection schedule in the city, but some county customers to see modified pickup dates

City of Sarasota administrative offices will be closed Monday, Dec. 23, through Wednesday Dec. 25, in observance of Christmas, as well as Wednesday, Jan. 1, in observance of New Year’s Day, the city has announced.

Additionally, most Sarasota County Government offices will be closed Dec. 24 and Dec. 25, as well as Dec. 31 and Jan. 1, a county news release says.

In the city, garbage, recycling and yard waste collection schedules will not be affected by the holidays, a city news release points out. However, no collections will take place on Dec. 25 or Jan. 1 in the unincorporated areas of the county. The revised schedule follows:

  • Mondays, Dec. 23 and Dec. 30 — no changes.
  • Tuesdays, Dec. 24 and Dec. 31 — no changes.
  • Wednesdays, Dec. 25 and Jan. 1, 2025 — no services.
  • Thursdays, Dec. 26 and Jan. 2, 2025 — collections for Wednesday customers.
  • Fridays, Dec. 27 and Jan. 3, 2025 — collection for Thursday customers.
  • Saturdays, Dec. 28 and Jan. 4, 2025 – collections for Friday customers.

In the city, the Bay Runner trolley will operate at its regular hours on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day —  7 a.m. to 10 p.m., the city news release says.

Holiday hours of operation at City of Sarasota facilities will vary, as follows:

  • Arlington Park and Aquatic Complex, located at 2650 Waldemere St., will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 23; it will be closed Dec. 24, Dec. 25, and Jan. 1.
  • Lido Pool, located at 400 Benjamin Franklin Drive, will be closed Dec. 23 through Dec. 25, as well as Jan. 1.
  • Payne Park Tennis Center, located at 2050 Adams Lane, will be open from 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 23. It will be closed Dec. 24, Dec. 25, and Jan. 1.
  • Robert L. Taylor Community Complex, located at 1845 34thSt., will be open from 6 to 10 a.m. Monday, Dec. 23; it will be closed Dec. 24, Dec. 25, and Jan. 1.
  • The box office of the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall, located at 777 N. Tamiami Trail, will be open on Dec. 23 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Dec. 24, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; it will be closed Dec. 25 and Jan. 1.

The following details have been provided about various county operations over the holidays:

  • Florida Department of Health in Sarasota County — Offices will be closed Dec. 23 through Dec. 25, plus Dec. 31 and Jan. 1, 2025.
  • University of Florida/Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS) Extension in Sarasota County — Offices will be closed Dec. 24-25, Dec. 31 and Jan. 1, 2025.

Transit schedule

  • Christmas Eve (Dec. 24) — Breeze administrative and ticket offices will be closed. Breeze services (standard and touring routes, OnDemand, and Plus) will operate as usual.
  • Christmas Day (Dec. 25) — Breeze administrative and ticket offices will be closed. Standard Breeze routes and Breeze Plus will not be operating. The 76 Flyer between downtown Sarasota and the Sarasota Bradenton International Airport (SRQ) will operate as usual. The 77 Siesta Islander and Breeze OnDemand will end service at 8 p.m.
  • New Year’s Eve (Dec. 31) — Breeze administrative and ticket offices, standard routes, the 76 Flyer, and Plus services will operate at their regular hours. The 77 Siesta Islander and Breeze OnDemand will operate with extended service, until 1 a.m. on Jan. 1, 2025.
  • New Year’s Day (Jan. 1) — Breeze administrative and ticket offices will be closed. Breeze standard routes and Breeze Plus will not operate. Touring routes and Breeze OnDemand will offer regular service.

Libraries and Historical Resources — All locations will be closed Dec. 24-25, Dec. 31 and Jan. 1, 2025.

Parks, Recreation and Natural Resources facilities — Recreation centers will be closed Dec. 24-25, Dec. 31 and Jan. 1, 2025. The Knight Trail Park Pistol and Rifle Range will be closed Dec. 23 through Dec. 26; it will resume operations on Dec. 27. The facility also will be closed Dec. 30 through Jan. 1, 2025; then, it will resume operations on Jan. 2, 2025.

Solid waste facilities

All solid waste facilities, including the Central County Landfill, the Citizens’ Convenience Center, and the Chemical Collection Centers will be closed Dec. 25 and Jan. 1, 2025.

The Central County Landfill and the Citizens’ Convenience Center will remain open until 5 p.m. on Dec. 28 and on Jan. 4 because of the holiday collection schedule. The Construction and Demolition (C&D) area will close at 2 p.m. those days. All persons planning to unload materials by hand must arrive at least 30 minutes before the closing times.

The Bee Ridge Chemical Collection Center, administrative office, and The Re-Uz-It Shop — located at 8750 Bee Ridge Road in Sarasota — and the Central County Landfill administrative office in Nokomis will be closed Dec. 24 and Dec. 31.

The Jackson Road Chemical Collection Center in Venice remains closed indefinitely because of impacts from Hurricane Ian.
