City and County of Sarasota offices and facilities to be closed for Jan. 20 observance of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. holiday

Garbage, recycling and yard waste collections to continue on normal schedule

City and County of Sarasota administrative offices will be closed on Monday, Jan. 20, in observance of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the local governments have announced.

Garbage, recycling and yard waste collections will not be affected by the holiday, city and county news releases note.

Additionally, Sarasota County staff says, the Breeze Transit routes and the OnDemand and Plus services will remain on their regular schedules.

Further, the disposal operations at the Central County Landfill, which stands at 4000 Knights Trail Road in Nokomis, and those of the Citizens’ Convenience Center, which is located at 4010 Knights Trail Road in Nokomis, will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. All customers who plan to unload by hand should arrive at least 30 minutes prior to closing, the county release points out.

In the city, the Bay Runner trolley will operate at its regular hours, 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., the city news release says.

Holiday hours of operation at City of Sarasota facilities will vary, as follows:

The regular Sarasota City Commission meeting, which normally would be scheduled for Monday, will be held at 9 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 21, in the Commission Chambers at City Hall, which stands at 1565 First St.

County facilities closed on Monday, Jan. 20 

  • Libraries and Historical Resources’ branches and office.
  • Breeze Transit administrative offices and ticket outlets will be closed.
  • The University of Florida/Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS) Extension Office in Sarasota County.
  • Parks, Recreation and Natural Resources’ recreation centers and the Knight Trail Park pistol and rifle range.
  • The Bee Ridge Chemical Collection Center, administrative office and The Re-Uz-It Shop, standing at 8750 Bee Ridge Road, and the Central County Landfill administrative office, located at 4000 Knights Trail Road, in Nokomis will be closed.
  • The Jackson Road Chemical Collection Center standing at 250 S. Jackson Road in Venice remains closed indefinitely because of the impacts from Hurricane Ian in 2022.
  • The facilities of the Florida Department of Health in Sarasota County.
  • Sarasota County Tax Collector offices.
  • Sarasota County Property Appraiser’s office.
  • Sarasota County Supervisor of Elections offices.
  • Sarasota County Clerk of the Circuit Court and County Comptroller offices ; the services can be accessed online at www.SarasotaClerk.com.
