Staff of the Sarasota County Stormwater Division will host two community workshops and participate in three hurricane expos in May, “to provide residents with important information on stormwater management, ongoing projects and hurricane preparedness,” county staff announced this week.

“Each workshop will cover similar topics, giving residents in different watersheds an opportunity to learn about stormwater maintenance, current and upcoming projects and best practices for storm season,” a news release explains.

“Presentations will be provided by the Stormwater Division manager and the Field Services Stormwater Operations manager,” the release adds. Following the presentations, attendees will be able to take part in breakout sessions “with professionals specializing in the Community Rating System, stormwater projects, water quality, stormwater engineering and field services to answer any questions,” the release notes.

The Community Rating System involves local government efforts to reduce the expense of National Flood Insurance Program policies for homeowners.

Residents are welcome to attend the workshop at the location most convenient for them, the release says. The following are the details about those events:

  • Little Sarasota Bay Watershed — Monday, May 5, 5 to 7 p.m., Gulf Gate Library, which is located at 7112 Curtiss Ave. in Sarasota.
  • Lemon Bay Watershed — Monday, May 12, 5 to 7 p.m., Englewood Sports Complex, which stands at 1300 S. River Road in Englewood.

In addition to those workshops, the release continues, Sarasota County staff members will be hosting a Hurricane Expo, and they will be available at the City of Venice and City of North Port hurricane expos to share stormwater and hurricane preparedness information with residents. The following are the details about those events:
