Members of the Sarasota County School Board have elected Jane Goodwin their chair. The action came during their annual reorganization meeting, which was conducted on Nov. 20.
Goodwin will serve a one-year term, which will end in November 2019, a school district news release explains. Caroline Zucker, who was elected vice chair, also will serve a one-year term.
“I am honored and humbled to serve as chair of the School Board,” said Goodwin. “Our board is committed to high standards for academic, emotional and civic growth for every student, every day. I remain acutely focused on closing the achievement gap, increasing reading proficiency in elementary schools, STEM education for middle-schoolers as well as career and college readiness for high schools,” she added. “I look forward to working with my fellow board members, district administrators, school leaders, community partners and statewide school board members to ensure our voice is heard in Tallahassee and resources are readily available to help Sarasota County remain a top-ranking district in Florida.”
Goodwin first was elected to the Sarasota County School Board in 2010. She also serves on the boards of the Florida School Music Association, the Venice Regional Bayfront Hospital and the Venice Performing Arts Center, the release says. Additionally, she serves as chair of the Florida School Board Association’s Legislative Committee and as secretary/ treasurer of the Florida Consortium of School Boards, the release notes.
Goodwin is a former teacher, the release adds; her two grandchildren attend Sarasota County public schools.
