March 1 City of Sarasota town hall on attainable housing planned at City Hall

Event scheduled from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Members of the public are invited to participate in a second City of Sarasota Attainable Housing Town Hall, “to learn about possible strategies that could encourage and boost the attainable housing inventory in Sarasota,” city staff has announced.

The Town Hall will be held on Wednesday, March 1, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at City Hall, located at 1565 First St. in downtown Sarasota. It also will be live-streamed and available on demand through the City of Sarasota website, www.SarasotaFL.gov, a news release notes.

“The March 1 Town Hall is a follow up to a well-attended session in January, when City of Sarasota staff outlined how attainable housing could be included in future developments within downtown Sarasota zone districts,” the release explains.

“A Comprehensive Plan Amendment recently adopted by the City Commission creates the opportunity to increase the attainable housing inventory in four downtown zone districts: Downtown Bayfront (DTB), Downtown Core (DTC), Downtown Edge (DTE) and Downtown Neighborhood Edge (DTNE),” the release adds. In exchange for building attainable housing in downtown Sarasota, developers have the option of seeking a density bonus up to four times the base density, the release says.

On March 1, an overview of proposed incentives to encourage attainable housing will be presented, frequently asked questions will be addressed, and members of the public will have an opportunity to provide comments, the release adds.

The January Attainable Housing Town Hall may be viewed on demand via www.SarasotaFL.gov. It is archived on the “Meetings/Agendas/ Video” webpage under “Public Forums & Community Meetings of Interest,” the release notes.
