Once again, Sarasota Memorial Hospital (SMH) has been recognized among the world’s best hospitals, as shown in Newsweek’s seventh annual global ranking of medical centers, SMH announced this week.

SMH remains the only hospital in Southwest Florida “to ever make the list,” a news release points out; it has been recognized every year since Newsweek began providing its rankings in 2019.

To determine the 2025 rankings, Newsweek and global data firm Statista analyzed “more than 2,400 hospitals across 30 countries,” the release explains. “The list is based on patient care quality metrics and surveys of patients and peers, including thousands of doctors, healthcare professionals and hospital leaders,” the release adds. SMH-Sarasota is one of 412 hospitals in the United States and 20 in Florida to be recognized, the release notes.

“Sarasota Memorial Health Care System CEO David Verinder says this is just another testament to the dedicated staff and healthcare professionals who provide the needed care in this community,” the release continues.

“Throughout our 100-year history, the SMH team has grown in size and expertise,” Verinder said in the release. “This recognition is a reflection of their continued diligence and unwavering dedication to the community we serve.”

Alexis Kayser, healthcare editor for Newsweek, noted in the release that the number of hospitals worldwide continues to grow exponentially. The goal of the study, she added, is to aid patients and their loved ones in selecting the world-class medical center that will ensure them the best possible outcomes.

The World’s Best Hospitals 2025 list recognizes the best medical institutions in the following countries, the release points out: the United States, Germany, Japan, South Korea, France, Italy, United Kingdom, Spain, Brazil, Canada, India, Australia, Mexico, The Netherlands, Austria, Thailand, Switzerland, Sweden, Belgium, Finland, Norway, Denmark, Israel, Singapore, United Arab Emirates, Colombia, Saudi Arabia, Taiwan, Chile and Malaysia. The full list is published here.
