In an early morning operation on Friday, Feb. 21, the Sarasota Police Department SWAT team executed a search warrant at 2015 S. Tuttle Ave., Unit 6, in Sarasota that resulted in the arrest of a 19-year-old suspect on firearm-related charges, the agency has reported.

Fabian Rodriguez, of the above address, “was taken into custody and charged with being an adjudicated delinquent in possession of a firearm,” a news release says.

Rodriguez’s booking information, provided by the Corrections Division of the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office, says his arraignment is set for April 4. He was ordered held under $25,000 bond.

The search warrant, which was executed at approximately 5:20 a.m. on Feb. 21, “stemmed from an investigation into the unlawful possession of a firearm by an adjudicated delinquent,” the Police Department release explains. During their search of the residence, it notes, “detectives discovered a 9 mm semi-automatic handgun inside one of the apartment’s bedrooms.

The Probable Cause Affidavit in the case says that the weapon was a Sig Sauer. The affidavit also notes that a social media post that Rodriguez made on Feb. 14 showed him “sitting inside [the dwelling located at 2015 S. Tuttle Ave.] holding three suspected handguns.” One of those, the affidavit points out, appeared to be the Sig Sauer.

Photos obtained during the execution of the search warrant verified that the bedroom in the southwest corner of the unit was the setting for the photos in the social media post, the affidavit adds.

Rodriguez has been an “adjudged delinquent” since Aug. 22, 2023, the affidavit explains, as a result of the following charges: motor vehicle theft, fleeing to elude with lights and siren active, carrying a concealed weapon, unarmed burglary of an unoccupied structure, and grand theft with a value greater than $750 but less than $5,000. “Therefore,” the affidavit says, “Rodriguez is prohibited from possessing, carrying, or owning a firearm until he is twenty-four (24) years of age.”

“The Sarasota Police Department continues to emphasize its commitment to removing illegal firearms from the community and ensuring public safety,” the Feb. 21 news release stresses.

A Sarasota News Leader search of the records maintained by the Office of the Sarasota County Clerk of the Circuit Court and County Comptroller also found that, in November 2024, Rodriguez was charged with Resisting an Officer without Violence. He ended up pleading “No Contest” on Jan. 21 in connection with that incident. He was placed on probation for 12 months, court records show.
