On Saturday, April 25, the Sarasota Police Department will partner with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and the Caring Collective in Sarasota as it takes part in the 30th National Prescription Drug Take Back Day, the agency has announced.

The event will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at two locations in the city of Sarasota, a news release says: the Police Department headquarters, which stands at 2099 Adams Lane in downtown Sarasota; and the Caring Collective, which stands at 1750 17th St.

Twice a year, the DEA partners with local law enforcement agencies and community groups to host National Prescription Drug Take Back Day, “providing the public with a safe and anonymous way to dispose of expired and unused prescription medications,” the release explains. “Proper disposal helps prevent prescription drug misuse and rescues the risk of accidental poisoning,” the release points out.

The following details also are included in the release:

  • What will be accepted — tablets, capsules, patches “and other forms of prescription drugs. “Liquid products, such as cough syrup, should be securely sealed in their original container,” the release notes.
  • What will not be accepted — syringes, sharps and illicit drugs. To learn how to properly dispose of these items, agency personnel encourage the public to visit FDA.gov.

“Over the past 16 years, National Prescription Take Back Day has removed more than 20 million pounds of unwanted medications from communities across the United States,” the release points out. The Sarasota Police Department also has a permanent drop box in the lobby of its headquarters, which is open daily from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., the release adds.
