Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office detectives are continuing to investigate a June 5 shooting incident that occurred in the area of the Mall at University Town Center, Community Affairs Director Kaitlyn R. Perez has reported.

The department’s Public Safety Communications Center received more than 30 911 calls around 7:30 p.m. that day “regarding a possible active shooter situation,” Perez pointed out in a news release.

Preliminary witness statements indicated the possibility of at least two vehicles driven by suspects who exchanged gunfire in the 200 block of Cattlemen Road, she added.

of video surveillance — detectives believe the two vehicles were a silver Nissan Altima with the driver’s side rear window shot out, and a gray vehicle of unknown make and model, Perez added.

“Detectives believe this incident was isolated in that the drivers were not attempting to endanger patrons [of the mall and other businesses]” but, instead, may have been engaged in a personal dispute, Perez reported.

The Sheriff’s Office has no knowledge of victims in this case, nor was any property damage sustained by any businesses in the area, Perez noted.

The investigation is active and ongoing. Anyone with information is urged to call the Criminal Investigations Section at 941-861-4900.
