In U.S. News evaluations, variety of data used from U.S. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services
Sarasota Memorial Hospital’s Nursing & Rehabilitation Center has been named among the nation’s top nursing homes for short- and long-term rehabilitation in U.S. News’ annual Best Nursing Homes ratings, the health care system has announced.
Now in their 13th year, a Sarasota Memorial news release notes, “the Best Nursing Homes ratings recognize the top nursing homes in every U.S. state and large metropolitan area to help prospective residents and their families make informed decisions about where to receive short-term or long-term nursing home care.” Only 16% of the more than 15,000 skilled-nursing facilities evaluated earned the Best Nursing Home rating this year, the release adds.
For more than 25 years, the release points out, Sarasota Memorial has been providing short- and long-term rehabilitation and skilled nursing care at its Skilled Nursing & Rehabilitation Center on its Clark Road campus. Located at 5640 Rand Blvd. in Sarasota, the facility offers a variety of services “for patients recovering from surgery, injury or illness,” the release adds. It has a multi-disciplinary team, representing an array of medical specialties, which “cares for approximately 120 residents around the clock, 365 days a year,” the release points out.
“Our mission is to provide the highest level of care in the most comfortable and healing environment possible,” said Maria DeCarlo, vice president of Sarasota Memorial’s post-acute and rehabilitation services, in the release. “This award is a reflection of that mission and a source of pride for our staff.”
To calculate the Best Nursing Homes ratings, U.S. News evaluated each nursing home’s performance based on a variety of data obtained from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), the release explains. Among the data reviewed are consistency of registered nurse staffing, use of antipsychotic drugs, and success in preventing emergency room and hospital visits, the release notes. The long-term care rating also includes measures of whether a home changed ownership and how well facilities were staffed on weekends, the release adds.
Further, the short-term rehabilitation rating includes “measures of a home’s success in preventing falls, preventing serious infections, and making sure residents are able to return homes.”
“Choosing the right nursing home based on care needs and comfort is a critical decision for prospective residents and their families,” said Zach Adams, health data engineer at U.S. News, in the release. “The Best Nursing Homes ratings highlight nursing homes that excel in short-term rehabilitation and long-term care needs,” he added in the release.
