City and county administrative offices to be closed on May 31 for Memorial Day observance

No changes planned in garbage, recycling and yard-waste collections

City and County of Sarasota administrative offices will be closed Monday, May 31, in observance of Memorial Day, both local governments have announced.

Residential garbage, recycling and yard waste collection and commercial garbage collection schedules will be unaffected by the holiday, the city and county say.

Since collection times vary, county residents should place materials at the curb by 6 a.m. on the day of pickup, the county news release points out.

Additionally, the Central County Landfill and the Citizens’ Convenience Center, located at 4010 Knights Trail Road in Nokomis, will be open, the county release adds.

Hours of operation at city recreation and cultural arts facilities will vary on Memorial Day:

The annual Memorial Day parade has been canceled, a city news release points out. However, the Sarasota Patriotic Observance Committee will hold a ceremony at 11 a.m. on Memorial Day, May 31, at Chaplain J.D. Hamel Park, which is located at 199 Bayfront Drive in Sarasota.

County closings on May 31 

  • The Sarasota County Area Transit (SCAT) administrative offices and the downtown Sarasota transfer station customer service window will be closed.
  • No regular SCAT bus services, emergency on-demand services or SCAT Plus services will be provided.
  • Parks, Recreation and Natural Resources recreational facilities will be closed.

However, the Siesta Key Breeze open-air trolley will operate on its usual schedule.

  • The Florida Department of Health in Sarasota County, which has offices in downtown Sarasota, will be closed.
  • Sarasota County’s Chemical Collection Centers, located at 8750 Bee Ridge Road in Sarasota and at 250 S. Jackson Road in Venice, will be closed.
  • The administrative offices at the Central County Landfill, located at 4000 Knights Trail Road, and the Chemical Collection Center standing at 8750 Bee Ridge Road will be closed. In addition, the Re-Uz-It Shop remains closed to the public at this time because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
