Funeral arrangements announced for Commissioner Detert

Burial Mass planned for April 29 in Venice

A Mass of Christian Burial for Sarasota County Commissioner Nancy Detert, who died on April 5, will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 29, at Epiphany Cathedral in Venice, Farley Funeral Home in Venice has announced.

The cathedral stands at 310 Sarasota St. in Venice.

A reception will follow from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Plantation Golf & Country Club, located at 500 Rockley Blvd. in Venice (34293), Detert’s obituary says.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to the Gulf Coast Community Foundation, 601 Tamiami Trail S., Venice, FL 34285, with the memo line: Nancy Detert Memorial Fund, the obituary adds. The funds “will go to her greatest causes and passions,” the obituary points out.

Detert, who was born in Chicago on Oct. 22, 1944, is survived by two brothers, Jim and Denis, as well as their wives, Lynda and Robin, respectively; and sisters Marilyn and Kay, plus Kay’s husband, Mike, the obituary says. Detert also is survived by her sons Mark, Bryan and Jamie, and their wives, Sandy, Jackie and Karla. She had nine grandchildren, three step-grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and four step-great-grandchildren, the obituary adds.

Detert moved to Florida in 1978 with her husband Herman “Bill” Detert and family, the obituary notes.
