The League of Women Voters Sarasota County (LWVSRQ) and the nonprofit Suncoast Searchlight news organization have scheduled three candidate forums ahead of the Aug. 18 Primary Elections, they announced this week.

Each forum will be held this month, a news release notes. They will be  moderated by Vilia Johnson, co-president of the LWVSRQ, and Emily

LeCoz, executive editor-in-chief of Suncoast Searchlight, a news release says.

All candidates for the two Sarasota County Commission races this and the three Sarasota County School Board seats have been invited to attend separate forums, the release points out.

In keeping with the missions of both the League and Suncoast Searchlight, the release continues, “these forums will allow voters to hear directly from the candidates as they all answer the same carefully curated nonpartisan questions.”

Each forum will last one hour, to be followed by a 30-minute “meet-and-greet” session with the candidates.

In-person attendance is encouraged, though all of the forums will be live-streamed and recorded for viewing on the League’s YouTube Channel, the release points out. Seating is limited for the in-person events, it adds, so interested persons are encouraged to register online and arrive early to secure their seats.

The schedule is as follows:

  • Thursday, June 18, 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. — Candidates for Sarasota County Commission Districts 2 and 4; Selby Public Library, which is located at 1331 First St. in downtown Sarasota.
  • Tuesday, June 23, 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. — Candidates for Sarasota County School Board Districts 1 and 4; Selby Public Library in downtown Sarasota.
  • Wednesday, June 24 — Sarasota County School Board candidates for Districts 1 and 5; Jacaranda Library, which stands at 4243 Woodmere Park Blvd. in Venice (34293).
