Free reception to be held at Chidsey Building in Sarasota on Friday evening, Feb. 17
Florida Lost Tribes, an exhibit featuring portraits of Florida’s original inhabitants, will open with a free 6 p.m. reception on Friday, Feb. 17, at the historic Chidsey Building in downtown Sarasota, Sarasota County staff has announced.
The display will serve as “an opportunity to share information about Sarasota County’s extensive collection of Native American mounds and shell middens, some of which still exist,” a news release notes. The exhibit is part of the county’s celebration of Florida Archeology Month, the release points out.
The Chidsey Building is located at 701 N. Tamiami Trail, the release adds. The artist, Theodore Morris, will speak at 7 p.m. Although the event will be open to the public, reservations are required, the release notes. Interested persons may call the Friends of the Sarasota County History Center at 361-2453 during its business hours, noon to 4:30 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday, the release says.
“Florida Archeology Month is celebrated each March through statewide programs and events designed to encourage Floridians and visitors to lean more about the archaeology and history of the state and preserve these important parts of its rich cultural heritage,” the release adds.
