Friends of Osprey Junction Trailhead and Friends of The Legacy Trail will be giving away free helmets to children ages 1 to 18 on April 6 at Osprey Junction Trailhead Park, the nonprofits have announced.
Hours for the event will be 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., a news release points out.
The park, which is adjacent to The Legacy Trail, is located at 939 E. Bay Street in Osprey.
To receive a helmet, child must be present to be fitted for the equipment, the release explains. Additionally, the limit of one helmet per child has been set, the release notes.
A parent or legal guardian must accompany and sign up children for the youngsters to receive free helmets, the release emphasizes. Helmets will be given away on a first-come, first-served basis, while supplies last, the release says.
The Safe Routes to School Helmet Fitting Event is part of the Safe Routes to School (SRTS) statewide program, which is funded by the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), the release notes. FDOT’s goal “is to encourage more children to walk and bicycle to school, the release adds. “Florida SRTS funds projects that promote walking and bicycling through education/encouragement programs aimed at children, parents and the community,” the release says.
