Funding will support upgraded parking lot lighting at downtown facility

“For many older adults, something as simple as better lighting can make the difference between staying home and staying connected,” a news release points out. “That idea is behind a $120,000 grant from the William G. and Marie Selby Foundation to Senior Friendship Centers, which will fund the replacement of outdated parking lot lighting at its Sarasota campus,” the release says.
“More than 5,000 people visit the Sarasota center each year, and for many, being able to arrive safely is essential to maintaining independence and daily routines,” the release notes. “Poor lighting in parking and pedestrian areas can increase the risk of falls and make participation more difficult, particularly for those with limited mobility or vision challenges,” the release adds.
“The Selby Foundation grant will fund the installation of modern, energy-efficient lighting designed to provide clear, consistent illumination across parking areas, walkways, and building entrances,” it continues. “The improvements will increase visibility, reduce risk, and support participation in programs offered throughout the day and evening,” the release points out.
“This investment helps ensure that every person who comes to our Sarasota campus can do so safely and with confidence,” said Erin McLeod, president and CEO of Senior Friendship Centers, in the release. “Something as simple as reliable lighting can make the difference between isolation and engagement. We are deeply grateful to the Selby Foundation for recognizing the importance of this need,” she added.
Declan Sheehy, chief advancement officer, noted in the release that the project will provide long-term benefits with minimal maintenance costs. The new system also will be more energy-efficient, helping reduce ongoing operating expenses, the release points out.

“The mission of Senior Friendship Centers is to build vibrant communities by advancing wellness, connection, and enrichment throughout the journey of aging,” the release explains. Since 1973, the organization has served people 50 and older in Sarasota, Charlotte, DeSoto and Lee counties with programs and services, including activity centers, lifelong learning, dining centers and meals delivered to the homebound, caregiver support, adult day services, supportive aging services, and volunteer opportunities, the release adds.
