On Saturday, June 6, at Selby Library in downtown Sarasota, the Sarasota County Libraries and Historical Resources Department staff will host SRQCon, an annual event featuring “costumes, gaming, workshops, a vendor hall, hands-on crafts, and interactive fandom activities throughout the building,” staff has announced.

The library stands at 1331 First St. in Sarasota.

“The free, all-ages pop culture convention” will begin at 11 a.m. and end at 4 p.m., a news release says.

No tickets or registration is required, the release points out.

Among the facets of this year’s SRQCon will be the following, the release continues:

  • “A costume contest for all ages with the opportunity to win prizes.
  • “Hands-on workshops on comics, drawing, and writing led by local artists.
  • “Themed fandom activities and a costume dance.
  • “Gaming spaces with video games, virtual reality, and group activities.
  • “Drop-in crafts” such as the making of buttons, bracelets and watercolor art.
  • “A vendor area featuring local artists, authors, and fandom-inspired goods.”

“SRQCon brings our community together through creativity, storytelling and shared interests,” said Renee DiPilato, director of Libraries and Historical Resources, in the release. Through the department’s offering of “fun experiences at no cost,” she pointed out, “everyone has the opportunity to explore what they love and discover something new.”

Food vendors will be available on the site, the release adds.

“Costumes must be appropriate for all ages,” it points out. Further, it says, “All participants and attendees must follow Sarasota County Library Rules of Conduct and Facility Rules while on the premises, as well as the SRQCon rules.
