Sarasota Memorial Health Care System (SMH) has been named on the Forbes list of America’s Best Large Employers 2024, the hospital staff has announced.

In this year’s list, Sarasota Memorial Hospital (SMH) “ranked among the top 20% of thousands of large U.S. employers, across all industries, and among the top three largest healthcare employers in Florida,” a news release points out.

“Produced in partnership with research company Statista, America’s Best Employers rankings demonstrate sustained performance over the past three years,” the release says. The rankings “are based on independent surveys of more than 170,000 U.S. employees working at companies employing at least 1,000 people in the United States,” the release explains. “The 2024 list includes all top-ranked companies as well as top-ranking mid-size organizations (those with 1,000 to 5,000 employees) and large organizations (those with more than 5,000 employees),” the release adds.

With more than 10,000 employees, SMH was ranked No. 107 among all large employers; in Florida, SMH ranked  No. 3 among the state’s largest healthcare employers, the release notes.

“Sarasota Memorial CEO David Verinder credits the public health system’s deep roots in the community and team’s shared mission for the repeated recognition by Forbes,” the release adds.

“Sarasota Memorial has been caring for this community for nearly 100 years,” he said in the release. “There is a sense of pride and community ownership that has inspired our staff through the decades and continues to guide us today,” he added.

The recognition from Forbes comes on top of a long list of national accolades that SMH received in 2023, “including multiple ‘Best Hospital’ rankings and ratings from U.S. News & World Report, continuous 5-star ratings from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, Magnet designation for 20 consecutive years, and repeated recognition on Newsweek’s list of the World’s Best Hospitals to name a few,” the release points out.

“In previous years, Forbes/Statista also recognized SMH among Florida’s Best-in-State Employers and among the nation’s Best Employers for Women, a designation given to less than 1% of large companies nationwide,” the release continues. “As with all Forbes lists, companies pay no fee to be considered,” the release also notes.

“For the 2024 rankings, employees surveyed were asked to rate their employer based on a range of criteria, including working hours, gender pay equity, opportunities for training and promotion, workload expectations, parental leave benefits, and the degree of diversity on the management team,” the release explains. Participants also were asked whether they would recommend their employer to others, the release says, and they were given the opportunity to rate other employers in their respective industries. “Responses were given by current employees, prior employees, and those familiar with the company through friends, family or peers within their industry,” the release notes. The survey analysis included data from the past three years, “with a heavier weight given to evaluations from current employees and more recent data,” the release points out.

“All responses were tallied and weighted to produce a score for each company.” The 1,000 companies with the highest scores landed on Forbes’ final lists — 400 on America’s Best Midsize Employers 2024 and 600 on America’s Best Large Employers 2024,” the release says.
