Most Sarasota County and City of Sarasota government offices will be closed Monday, May 26, in observance of Memorial Day, the staff of each has announced.

Curbside collections of trash, recycling and yard waste for residents in both the unincorporated areas of Sarasota County and the city will not be affected by the holiday and will remain on the regular pickup schedule, the county and the city point out.

The following will be closed in the county on May 26:

  • All Sarasota County Libraries and Historical Resources offices and facilities.
  • The Florida Department of Health offices in Sarasota County.
  • Sarasota County University of Florida Institute of Food and Agriculture Sciences Extension and Sustainability offices (UF/IFAS).
  • Sarasota County Breeze Transit administrative offices and ticket outlets. None of the standard bus routes nor the Breeze 76 Flyer nor Breeze Plus will operate on Memorial Day.
  • Parks, Recreation and Natural Resources recreation facilities and the Knight Trail Park pistol and rifle range.
  • The Bee Ridge Chemical Collection Center, administrative offices and the Re-Uz-It Shop, located at 8750 Bee Ridge Road in Sarasota.
  • The Central County Landfill administrative office, which stands at 4000 Knights Trail Road, and the Jackson Road Chemical Collection Center, which is located at 250 S. Jackson Road in Venice.
  • Offices of Sarasota County Tax Collector Mike Moran.
  • Offices of Sarasota County Clerk of the Circuit Court and County Comptroller Karen Rushing.
  • Offices of Sarasota County Supervisor of Elections Ron Turner.
  • The Office of Sarasota County Property Appraiser Bill Furst.

Disposal operations at the Central County Landfill, which stands at 4000 Knights Trail Road in Nokomis, and the Citizens’ Convenience Center, which is located at 4010 Knights Trail Road in Nokomis, will be open on Monday, May 26, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., the county news release says. All customers unloading by hand should arrive at least 30 minutes before the closing time, the release stresses.

The Breeze 77 Siesta Islander trolley on Siesta Key, which circulates on part of the mainland, and Breeze OnDemand services will operate at their normal hours, the release says.

In the city, the free Bay Runner trolley will operate at its regular hours — 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. — the city release notes. However, the Bay Runner’s route will be modified from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. “to accommodate the Memorial Day parade on Main Street,” the release says.

Holiday hours of operation at City of Sarasota facilities will vary, as shown below:

The box office of the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall, located at 777 N. Tamiami Trail,  will be closed.

The City of Sarasota, in conjunction with the Sarasota Patriotic Observance Committee, will host the annual Memorial Day parade starting at 10 a.m. on Monday, May 26, in downtown Sarasota, the city news release reminds the public.

The parade will begin at the intersection of Main Street and Osprey Avenue. It will conclude at Chaplain J.D. Hamel Park, which stands at the intersection of Main Street and Gulfstream Avenue. There, a ceremony will be held at approximately 11 a.m. The public is encouraged to attend the parade and ceremony, the release adds.
