Delay not anticipated to affect timeline for project completion
Demolition work at the city of Sarasota’s Lift Station 87 site has been postponed briefly to allow the contractor an opportunity to pursue a right of way permit from the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), the city announced on Jan. 11.
PCL Construction, the Lift Station 87 Phase 2 contractor, is proposing to install a temporary de-acceleration lane in FDOT’s right of way to accommodate construction traffic leaving and entering Luke Wood Park, a city news release explains. The temporary lane would minimize traffic impacts on U.S. 41 “and enhance the safety of motorists,” the release adds.
“During demolition and construction, heavy equipment and trucks will be traveling to and from the Lift Station 87 site,” which has a single entry point on U.S 41, the release points out. The requested permit would allow normal traffic patterns to be maintained on U.S. 41 by directing construction traffic to a temporary lane that would be installed on the right of way running parallel to Luke Wood Park, the release says.
Demolition will begin after FDOT completes its review and makes a decision on the requested permit, the release notes. More schedule information will be provided when demolition begins, the release says.
In the meantime, PCL Construction is continuing to work on its pre-construction and planning activities, including engineering submittals, site surveys and equipment mobilization, the release points out. “The temporary delay in demolition activities is not anticipated to impact the overall project schedule,” the release adds.
The lift station has been planned to serve about one-third of the city’s customers, including Sarasota Memorial Hospital, City Manager Tom Barwin has explained. It is expected to be completed in the late spring of 2020.
