Limited information released

The Sarasota Police Department is continuing to investigate “the tragic death of a child” in north Sarasota, the agency announced on May 14.
Neither the age nor gender of the child was included in the initial news release, which was issued on Monday, May 11.
About midafternoon on May 14, the agency reported that “preliminary information indicates there are no signs of foul play.” That news release added, “Detectives remain in close contact with the District 12 Medical Examiner’s Office as the investigation continues.”
Further, the May 14 release explained, “The official cause and manner of death are pending the results of the medical examiner’s testing, which may take some time to complete.”
Finally, it said, “Out of respect for the family and the ongoing investigation, no additional details will be released at this time.”
A 911 call came into the county’s Public Safety Communications Center at approximately 8 a.m. on Monday, May 11, from a location in the 2800 block of Dixie Avenue, regarding a child who was not responsive, the initial news release pointed out.
Officers and paramedics “worked to revive the child” until they transported the child to Sarasota Memorial Hospital, where the child later died, the release added.
A Sarasota News Leader review of an aerial map found that Dixie Avenue is north of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Way in Sarasota and two blocks west of U.S. 301. The neighborhood in Newtown appears to be made up of single-family homes.
