Siesta Key’s Amateur Sand Sculpture Contest scheduled for Saturday, May 5

Cash prizes awarded in adult, youth and children’s categories

The annual Amateur Sand Sculpture Contest on Siesta Public Beach will be held on Saturday, May 5, for the 46th year, the Sarasota County Parks, Recreation and Natural Resources Department has announced.

“This free, family-friendly event is open to all ages and all amateur skill levels,” a news release points out. “Cash prizes, which are sponsored by the Friends of Sarasota County Parks and the Siesta Key Chamber of Commerce, are awarded to first-, second- and third-place finishers in the adult (individual), adult (team), children (10 years old and younger) and youth (11-17 years old) categories, the release adds. One overall people’s choice winner is recognized, as well.

Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m. May 5 on Siesta Beach near the yellow lifeguard stand, where each participants will be assigned a 10-foot-by-10-foot square, the release notes. Judging will begin at 1 p.m., with the awards presented at 2 p.m. Spectators are invited to vote for the people’s choice award.

Siesta Beach is located at 948 Beach Road on Siesta Key. No rain date is scheduled for this event, the release points out.
